At their small shop in the IMM Building, the couple said they first conceived the idea of creating TheBikeShack in early 2021 after a series of events led them to discover their new passion.

“I found it wasn’t that difficult, you have so many references online. So I started repairing my (wife’s) motorcycle, my motorcycle and our neighbors’ bikes,” he said.
“After the bike was finished, we bought some that weren’t good enough to fix and then sell them,” he said.

As a social enterprise, TheBikeShack imports folding bikes and helps people sell their used bikes for cash. The profits they earn go to support their projects and social endeavors.
But when Mr. Chong decided to leave a well-paying job in finance to build TheBikeShack full-time, his family urged him to reconsider, telling him to think about his three children.

Initially dismissing what he said, his thinking changed when Ms Chong was hospitalized in March this year for high blood pressure, which occurs when a person’s blood pressure rises to abnormally high levels, I don’t see.

The couple said that before agreeing to give the cycle, they will check whether it has been given to the social worker and make sure that the applicant is from a low-income family.

They work with organizations such as Thai Hua Kwan Ethical Charities and Fei Yue Community Services, who can refer beneficiaries to them.
After confirming the details, Ms Chong will speak with the beneficiary to understand their needs, so they can “customise” the motorcycle to suit their needs.
This process involves adjusting the wheelchair to suit the height of the beneficiary, as well as other accessories such as child seats. After that, those who benefit from them can be single mothers who use bicycles to send their children to school, Ms Chong said.

I spoke to one of the beneficiaries, Joseph Anthony, 64, who received a three-wheeler from the couple in October this year.
Mr. Anthony reached out to him after seeing his post on Carousel. He cannot ride a bicycle because of a medical condition that causes him to lose balance.
Due to his health, he is currently unemployed. But this gift gives him something to look forward to every day.

“It’s good, it’s really good because (the tricycle) opens up a lot of opportunities for me. I can go out to eat, I can go shopping, I can go sightseeing. It’s also good exercise,” Anthony said.
TheBikeShack relies on donors who offer “neglected” bikes for repair or are willing to take on the responsibility of buying and repairing an unwanted bike. When there was none, the Chongs took it upon themselves to buy a second-hand motorcycle.
There were times when he paid up to S$150 to buy a second-hand motorcycle and another S$50 to $100 for repairs due to a lack of donors.

Now, the couple is focused on selling more bikes to ensure the financial sustainability of their social enterprise.
“We will be successful if we don’t need it, which means people know how to take care and maintain their bikes properly… (or) there are no low-income families in Singapore. Then we get off,” he said with a laugh. .
Asked why TheBikeShack kept going despite the challenges, Ms Chong broke down and said it was always heartening to see how people continue to donate their bikes to those in need.
