In the old days, if a company wanted to stay ahead in the technology industry, it needed a data center, a place to host computers, and an IT team to handle it all. You need to include redundant power, backups and temperature control (machines run hot). A lot of resources, time and effort go into equipment and software to give you a foothold in the technology space. This creates a barrier to entry for companies, entrepreneurs and innovators who do not have the resources to build this infrastructure.

In the early 90s, Amazon was one of the first players in e-commerce, and AWS developed out of the need to build its own infrastructure. CEO Jeff Bezos has asked that each of Amazon’s divisions act as their own small company—they should create an enterprise-type interface to pull data from another division if they need data or resources. They used this mindset (with lots of money and resources) to build data centers with all the hardware, excess power and IT teams, manage them and make them available to other companies.

Now, instead of building infrastructure, companies can essentially rent infrastructure from AWS, lowering the barrier to entry for innovators and entrepreneurs. Organizations don’t need to have an on-site data center, they can rely on AWS, its redundancy, high availability, and everything else that makes that infrastructure valuable. These data centers are spread around the world and provide disaster recovery – if a center fails in one location, it can be rotated to another.

AWS offers dozens of services, from static servers that store static data to databases that host websites, robotics, game development, and augmented reality. As an organization, you will identify which AWS services you need, and as web developers we only need a small subset of them. We need to host our website, root URLs, and ways to store data and files like videos and images.

There is a bit of a learning curve, but it is relatively easy to set up these services on AWS and host your website with the full API. Organizations use continuous integration and deployment through third-party vendors such as Jenkins or Travis CI. Once built, web development is mostly done with AWS. Developers push code along with their code repository and plug it into the foundation, then take parts from continuous integration and deployment, run tests on the code, and push it to AWS. When a web developer writes code and makes changes, the impact is minimal. It’s great to realize that all the manual changes needed to use that code are now done automatically.
