Instance Type Amazon – In this article, I will talk about the different types of EC2 instances available in AWS. EC2, short for Elastic Compute Cloud, is an IaaS offering from AWS that allows users to provision virtual machines in the cloud using various combinations of CPU, RAM, disk and networking. Several predefined instance types are already available in the AWS console, making launching a new EC2 instance very easy.

As you can see in the image above, when you log into the AWS console, go to EC2 and then click on Instance Types. You can see all the different types of instances available in AWS that you can use according to your needs.

When an organization starts using AWS as a cloud platform, the use of many services such as EC2, S3, Lambda, RDS is inevitable. This is because a large number of applications actually rely on these services to perform their functions. Amazon offers several EC2 instance types that are specialized for different purposes. In the beginning, using EC2 can be a simple task for anyone starting to use AWS, however, as time goes by and the number of users and services increases, it is necessary to choose the right type of EC2.

There are several factors that help determine which type of EC2 instance will be right for your workload. You can also visit the AWS console to learn and understand the various instances available. In this article, I’ll summarize most of the details you need to know to choose the right instance type for EC2. Model types can be classified into five different categories as follows.

Whenever you start your journey with AWS and are not sure which instance type is right for your workload, you can start using general purpose instance types. There are basically two types of cases in this class – t2 and m5. These are just example types of range. “t” stands for

. T2 instances are of the distributable instance type, meaning you can use them to run your core applications, such as web pages, or even use them as a development environment. When this resource is not in use or just idle, you can generate CPU credit that can be used later when the resource is in use. Although it is a cheaper option in the AWS EC2 family, you cannot perform large computing or memory-intensive tasks with t2 instances.

If you need a computer or memory that the t2 instance type does not support, you can look at the m5 instance type. Besides m5, the family has other variants such as m4 or m6.

An m5 instance is also similar to a t2, but with more capacity and resources. From my personal experience, I can say that most general purpose instances on AWS use m5 or m5d instance types. The difference between m5 and m5d is that the former uses HDD and the latter uses SSD as the disk drive.

These types of instances have a high CPU-to-memory ratio. When you have applications that require a lot of computing power and no memory, you can use this instance family for EC2. These examples are typically found in the c4, c5, and c6 families, with c5 being the most commonly used. Short for “c” here

. These types of instances are typically used for running high-performance analytics workloads, playing multiplayer games, media transcoding and rendering, building complex machine learning and scientific modeling models.

These types of instances are optimized to perform memory-intensive operations such as using in-memory databases or real-time data processing using Apache Spark or Presto. You can use this family of instances to run high-performance relational databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, and NoSQL databases such as MongoDB and Cassandra. It can also be used to run OLAP and other similar analytical workloads such as SQL Server Analysis Services or SAP HANA. You can choose these cases from the r4 or r5 family.

Storage-optimized EC2 instances are used to support large I/O workloads such as parallel processing or MPP data storage. You can also use these instances to run MapReduce or Hadoop distributed workloads. Storage optimized instances have multiple types like d2, d3, h1, i3, etc. You can learn more about when to use a specific instance type from the official documentation. Two main types of storage device are commonly used in these cases – HDD and SSD. When you need to use database applications that need to support high read and write speeds, you should choose SSDs because they can handle faster writes compared to HDDs.

It is one of the latest additions to the AVS EC2 family of instances. It provides very high performance machine learning and computing capabilities for scientific workloads that cannot be contained in CPUs alone. External hardware such as GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) can support this workload. These cases also use hardware accelerators or coprocessors for graphics processing, running deep learning algorithms in a more efficient and faster way than a CPU.

One of the most commonly used instance types in this category is the GPU instance type. It gives users access to NVIDIA GPUs with over a thousand computing cores. You can easily use these instances for graphics processing, live game streaming, etc. There are several families in this category of computational examples as follows.

Additionally, there are many other types of cases used for accelerated computing, however, the two mentioned above are the most commonly used. AVS also provides a separate family of cases known as AVS Inferentia. These instances are specifically designed to support machine learning computations with a high-performance, low-latency interface. This allows you to offer any price you want, such as capacity, providing even more savings if the start and end times of your requests are flexible. When the price falls below your bid, your instance will be launched.

Note: With spot instances, if you end the instance, you pay by the hour. If AWS terminates an instance on the spot, you will receive the hours it was terminated for free.

A physical EC2 server dedicated to your use. It is different from other common types. Dedicated hosts can help keep costs down by allowing you to use your existing software licenses associated with the server. Can be purchased on demand (hourly). It can be bought as an order up to 70% off the price on request.

When you first create an EC2 instance, you can choose an Amazon Machine Image (AMI). AMI is a virtual appliance. The core component is a read-only file system image that contains the operating system and any additional software. You can create an AMI from volumes and snapshots.

If you install an instance, take a snapshot, and then create an AMI, you can use that AMI to launch a new instance with the same setup. This template can facilitate future installations. Note that you cannot delete
