Amazon delivery drivers were surprised to learn earlier this year that the e-commerce giant would sometimes use their tips to cover promised salaries.

Freedom To Choose How And When I Work

Amazon will provide a full breakdown of what Flex drivers pay for the company’s Prime Now, Fresh, and Whole Foods services for each service, including how much of the total payout comes from tips. The Times also confirmed that the company will no longer use extra earnings or tips to cover the minimum wage, and will pay drivers out of the promised minimum pocket.

The revelations came after The Times revealed in February that Amazon sometimes used customer tips to contribute to driver wage guarantees, cutting into Amazon’s wages. At the time, Amazon guaranteed $18 to $25 per hour, but contributed an average of $19 per hour to the promised hourly minimum wage.

“Amazon will always contribute at least $15 per scheduled hour to pay drivers, and often more, depending on location and demand,” said Amazon spokeswoman ReynaSoft in response to questions from The Times. “As usual, for deliveries with the tip option, the driver receives 100% of the tip.”

In the email, the company commits to pay at least $15 and up to $19 per hour for all services as an increase over the previous minimum contribution.

How Much Can You Make As A Delivery Driver With Amazon Flex?

“While revenue varies by region and block, with changes to Amazon’s minimum contribution, we expect the national average revenue for this block to increase to over $27 per hour,” said the email to drivers.

Others expressed confusion in the Facebook group as to whether this would actually be a pay rise, given the lack of transparency about how much Amazon contributes to their hourly wages. In the past, drivers were promised a minimum of $18 per hour. However, in some cases, not everything comes from Amazon.

Without clear details of each payment, drivers — who it’s speculated that their tips were used to cover company contributions — had to find creative ways to confirm their suspicions. One driver, Jeff Lee, said he tipped himself $12 for a package delivered to his house. Base salary is $27 for a 1½ hour shift. Including tips, he received just over $30, with Amazon donating just $18.

“The problem that most drivers have with Amazon is there is no transparency about our salaries,” Lee said in February.

At the time, an email from Amazon to the driver and delivery app said the tip was included in the base rate. However, in an email sent to drivers on Wednesday outlining the details of the new fare, the company changed the language to say that payment for each service is a “+ tip” base rate.

Several other companies, including Instacart and DoorDash, have come under fire for similar tipping practices. The latter is still tipping drivers nearly a month after announcing the shutdown, but said Thursday the practice would end next month with the adoption of a new pay structure that will also include a higher base salary.

The Day I Drove For Amazon Flex

Here we’ve uncovered five simple ways for drivers to make the most of their vehicle to offset the monthly cost!

E-commerce has experienced tremendous growth in recent years and couriers may struggle to keep up. So, they are trying to get as much manpower as possible to speed up the delivery process. They’re also looking for low-commitment solutions (think renting a van doesn’t require a full-time contract or a lot of paperwork), which is why self-driving drivers are in high demand.

And it is possible to cash in on this opportunity to get decent payouts. AmazonFlex SG promises that most of its agents can earn around SGD$21-26 per hour, which is very attractive. All you need to do is sign up for Amazon Flex then pick and drop a plan – it’s that easy!

If you don’t want to sell your car right now, even if you work from home most of the month, consider renting your car. A vehicle that should be sitting in the parking lot doing nothing can really pay off!

While you can offer peer-to-peer car rentals directly through various marketplace apps, these arrangements are usually not legal, which can result in high repair bills in the event of an accident. Hence, you should stick with a platform that provides adequate coverage for this purpose.

Overall neglected way to generate extra income. GrabHitch is designed to reduce CO2 emissions and encourage car owners to take passengers to their final destination at their own pace. Unlike other services that require a little more effort, GrabHitch still allows you to travel normally, the only difference is that you have to make small detours at the start and end of the trip to drop off the carpooling passengers.
