Authors who want to capture their share of the Amazon audiobook market have several ways to get their books on the platform.

But for many authors, the most important aspect of ACX isn’t the audiobook product. This is ACX’s role as an audiobook distributor. Book distribution through ACX is available on Amazon, Audible and iTunes.

Some authors are satisfied with these three distribution channels. But some authors prefer to distribute their books on other platforms like Google, Kobo, Overdrive or Audiobooks.com.

If you’re in the second group, you don’t need to go through ACX to sell your book on Amazon. You can also register with other audiobook distributors.

Many audiobook distributors serve as a one-stop shop for audiobook creators. Using one service, you can sell your book on Amazon, Audible, and iTunes. Some distributors, such as Scribe’s preferred distributor Writer’s Republic, reach more than 50 different outlets.

Please note that ACX is only available to residents of the US, UK, Canada and Ireland with a valid postal address, tax identification number and bank details from one of these countries.

If you already have an Amazon account, you can sign in using your existing credentials. Otherwise, you will need to create a new account.

You will be taken to a page where you can search the Amazon catalog for your current books.

Note that to get a book on ACX, it must be a print book or e-book on Amazon. If your book isn’t already listed, check out this post on how to add it.

If you are not automatically taken to the search page, click “Add your title” located at the top right of the ACX website.

I’ll talk more about output options in ACX below, but for this step-by-step guide we’ll assume you already have audio files that meet Amazon’s audio standards.

Publishers Are Pissed About Amazon’s Upcoming Audible Captions Feature

First, choose the areas where you have the rights to publish and distribute your audiobooks. If you’re a self-published author, you own all the rights to your book, so you can choose “World.”

If you choose exclusive distribution through ACX, your book cannot be distributed through other outlets. You get a higher royalty rate in return for exclusive distribution (40 percent vs. 25 percent for non-exclusive distribution).

I strongly recommend reading the agreement before clicking “Accept”. There are some tricky rules in ACX’s terms, especially when it comes to specials.

You will be prompted to “Describe your book for your Audible reseller page.” A description of the book’s Amazon page can already be found in this box. If so, review it to see if there are any changes you’d like to make.

If there is no text, you will add a description of the book that appears in the back of the book. Maximum character limit is 2,000.

ACX will also ask for the book’s copyright information. If you are self-published, you own the copyright for both the print and audio versions of the book. Enter Copyright Year – The year you published the work.

Self development? Health and fitness? A souvenir? If you can’t see a specific genre that fits your book, here’s a general non-fiction book option.

For “Audiobook details,” enter the narrator’s name and the publisher’s name. If you’re a self-published author and haven’t chosen a publishing label, you can create one or use your own.

ACX authors are required to upload audio files of their book chapter by chapter. A pop-up will remind you to use correct capitalization and standard chapter naming conventions.

Otherwise, you can enter the names of your chapters in the text box provided. Use a new line for each chapter.

On the left, you’ll see a green square that says “Upload Cover Image.” Click on it and select cover image and location on your computer.

ACX accepts JPG, PNG or TIF files, minimum size 2400 x 2400 pixels. There should be no horizontal or vertical image borders, and the image should contain the audiobook title.

After uploading the book cover, scroll down. Double check the chapter headings to make sure they are in the correct order.

You will upload a separate audio file for each chapter in your book. To do this, click on “Browse” and select the appropriate audio file for each chapter.

If ACX’s audio analysis finds elements that don’t meet your audio requirements, you’ll see “Problems found with the uploaded audio. Check the Audio Analysis tab.” You will see a red note.

Click on the “Audio Analysis Tab” link. This will tell you what specific problem you need to fix (volume, length, etc.).

A pop-up window will tell you “You’re about to submit your audiobook for review” and ask you one last time to confirm:

Your title will be submitted for audio evaluation. This review can take up to 30 business days, after which your book will be available for sale. If ACX encounters a problem with your submission, they will contact you with resubmission instructions.

Your account should now be fully configured. Once your book is approved, you can begin.

ACX’s service is better for first-time audiobook creators than trying to do it themselves. Creating a professional audiobook can be difficult unless you have proper recording equipment and experience.

But ACX also has drawbacks. You may end up with an inexperienced producer or storyteller, or producers who are unhappy or unable to add big changes, meet deadlines or run into professional issues such as high quality. Maintain position.
