Love it or hate it, Amazon is the undisputed leader in audiobook sales. In 2018, Amazon accounted for 41 percent of audiobook sales in the United States. That leaves 59% of the market for all vendors, including Apple, Google and Kobo, to fight for.

Authors who want to capture their share of the Amazon audio market have several ways to get their books on the platform.
Below, I’ll explain how to sell books on Amazon through ACX, Amazon’s audiobook distribution service. I will also discuss with other publishers how to list your book on Amazon and why it is a great option for authors.
The most common way to get your book on Amazon is to use the Audiobook Creation Exchange (ACX). Amazon owns Audible’s ACX.
If you’re familiar with e-book publishing, ACX works like Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP). It’s a “definitive marketplace where authors, journalists, publishers and other stakeholders can connect with narrators, engineers, recording studios and other tools that can create a finished audiobook.”

But for many writers, the highlight of the ACX is not the audio performance. This is ACX’s role as an audiobook publisher. Distributing a book through ACX makes it available on Amazon, Audible and iTunes.
Some authors are satisfied with those 3 types of distribution. However, some authors prefer to distribute their books on other platforms such as Google, Kobo, Overdrive or Audiobooks.com.
If you belong to the second group, you do not need to go through ACX to sell your book on Amazon. You can sign up with other audiobook publishers with a wide range.
Many audiobook publishers serve as a one-stop shop for audiobook creators. Using a service, you can sell your book on Amazon, Audible and iTunes. Some publishers, like Scribe’s favorite publisher, Writer’s Republic, reach more than 50 different outlets.

Note that ACX is only available to residents of the US, UK, Canada and Ireland with a valid email address, tax identification number and bank account details from one of those countries.
If you have an Amazon account, you can use your credentials to log in. If not, you will need to create a new account.
You need all 3 to fully publish your book. But now, select “Start My Audiobook”.

You will be taken to a page where you can search Amazon’s inventory for your current books.
Note that to claim a book in ACX, it must be available as a print book or e-book on Amazon. If your book is not listed, see this post to learn how to add it.
If you are not redirected to the search page, click “Add your title” located in the upper right corner of the ACX site.
I will tell you more about the options in ACX below, but we assume that you have audio files that meet Amazon’s audio standards for this guide.

First, select the countries where you have the right to publish and distribute your audiobook. If you are a self-published author, you own all the rights to your book, so you can choose the “world”.
If you choose exclusive distribution through ACX, you cannot distribute your book to other stores. You get a higher royalty rate for distribution (40 percent instead of 25 percent for no distribution).
I strongly recommend that you read the agreement before clicking “Yes”. There are some complexities to ACX’s claims, including exclusivity.
You will be asked to “Define your book for your Audible Store page”. The Amazon page description of your book can be in this box. If so, check to see if there are any changes you want to make.

If there is no text, you will want to enter the description of your book, as it appears on the back of your book. The maximum is 2,000.
ACX will also ask you for your book’s copyright information. If you self-publish, you are the copyright holder of your print and audio versions. List the year of publication – the year you published the work.
Self-development? Health and fitness? A message? A general non-fiction book is an option if you don’t see a specific genre that suits your book.
For “Audiobook Details”, list your author and publisher names. If you are a freelance writer and you haven’t chosen a publisher, you can create one or use your own.

ACX requires authors to upload audio files of their books in each chapter. A pop-up reminds you to use correct combinations of capitalization and chapter names.
Otherwise, you can enter the chapter names in the text box provided. Use a new line for each chapter.
On the left, you’ll see a gray box that says “Upload Cover Image.” Click on it and choose your cover photo and its location on your computer.
ACX accepts JPG, PNG, or TIF files with a minimum resolution of 2400 x 2400 pixels. There is no limitation of width and height of the image, and the image must be an audiobook title.

Once you have uploaded your book cover, click below. Double check your chapters and make sure they are correct.
Upload a separate audio file for each chapter of your book. To do this, click “Browse” and select the appropriate audio file for each chapter.
If ACX’s audio analysis finds elements of your audio that do not meet its requirements, you will see a red message, “The downloaded audio had problems. Check the Audio Analysis tab.
Click the link for the “Audio Analysis Tab”. Tell us a specific problem you need to solve (size, length, etc.).

A pop-up will say, “You are submitting your audiobook for review,” and ask you to confirm one last time:
Your title will then be submitted, pending audio review. This review may take up to 30 business days, after which your book will be available for sale. If ACX has a problem with your shipment, we will contact you with reshipment instructions.

But ACX has some disadvantages. You can end up with an unknown worker or a storyteller, or you can face business problems, such as employees who are unwilling or unable to implement major changes due to constraints, time and high standards.
