In order to get an accurate estimate for AWS services, it’s important to know exactly what services your business needs. Buying a server instance designed to handle enterprise-level traffic when you don’t need it is a costly mistake. Likewise, subscribing to an inadequate service can reduce productivity and waste money. Know your business needs and the services that meet those needs.
A simple AWS monthly cost calculator is free and doesn’t require you to have an AWS account in advance. As you can see in Figure A, the initial screen can be quite intimidating.

For example, we will compare three service levels: basic, storage and email, small business with IoT, and database. We will ignore the one-year free tier for new users.
For a simple level of storage services, we select S3 from the list of services on the left and fill in the appropriate details (Figure B). A basic 1 TB file storage instance with 1000 accesses per month is estimated to cost $23.71 per month.
For the next level of service, we keep the storage as is and add email. Click on the SES item from the left list. As you can see in Figure C, this is the AWS Simple Email System details page. We will choose an email system that can handle 100,000 emails per month and 100 GB of data. Total storage and email costs $88.21
In the third and final step of the comparison, we save storage and email and add an EC2 instance to a standard SQL database. As you can see in Figure D, adding database services increases the estimated monthly cost significantly to a total of $585.97.

Amazon offers a secondary cost estimator called the AWS Pricing Calculator. It works like a regular monthly calculator, but with service details on a separate web page. Some decision makers will find it easier to use this tool.
Note that these two cost estimation tools do not account for more exotic AWS services such as IoT controllers, Backup Plans, or Lightsail virtual machines. Businesses wishing to estimate the cost of these types of services should use the price estimates provided for each service.
For example, if we add a basic 500GB per month AWS backup plan to our list of services, that adds another $25 to our total monthly bill. Add two primary Lightsail virtual machines running Linux and add $40 per month.
As Table B shows, costs start to add up quickly, so it’s critical that decision makers have a clear understanding of their business needs.

Monitoring service usage and associated costs is a key consideration in exploring and expanding your usage. We recommend using Budget to ensure you don’t exceed your free tier usage limit and total budget. With the budget tracking feature, you can create a personal spending budget that notifies you when you exceed the budget limit. In this tutorial, you’ll learn how Free Tier offers and budgets track your Free Tier usage by default, and how to create a monthly total spending budget that notifies you if you go over or over your budget.
A best practice is to create a total monthly spending budget for each account you use. Since the Free Tier budget limit is 62 budget days per month, creating one budget is included in the Free Tier limit. As the name suggests, the Free Tier service is free to use.
