Since 2007 we have presented more than 200 different types of events. Some of these include new sizes of C5d and EC2 high-memory instances. This wide selection means getting the best price and performance for a wide variety of jobs. With over 200 events to choose from, finding the right type of event can be challenging. To make it easier for customers to find and compare EC2 instance types, we now have a new “Instance Type” section in the EC2 console and two new APIs: DescribeInstanceTypes and DescribeInstanceTypeOfferings. With this offer, you can access event type details, supported features, regional availability, pricing and more.

Until now, cloud architects and DevOps engineers had to specify multiple data sources and test multiple instances before making a choice. This process is time-consuming and requires iteration for each new workload, and existing workloads must be continuously upgraded as requirements evolve and new EC2 types and features are released. There is now a single source of information for all instance types, enabling customers to compare options and quickly access the latest information programmatically and in the EC2 console.

This blog tells you how to take advantage of these new offerings so you can find the right instance type for your workload. I’ll show you how to use filters to get a list of event types that meet your needs. I also show how to compare event types to easily spot differences. Sample commands are included to help you get started with the command-line interface.

3. Next, search in the search bar or set filters to limit the list of event types that meet your work needs. You can enter search terms directly or use filters to filter specific characteristics.

For example, setting “current generation” to “true” displays only the current generation’s event types. Typing the word “metal” limits the results to only .metal event types. Limits can be set using “Maximum” and “Minimum” filters. For example, the “Min Memory (MiB)” filter restricts the list to only instance types with the minimum required memory.

For example, in the image below I have selected three affordable options that meet my criteria. Selected events are displayed next to the details pane for easy comparison. Bold text in the details panel highlights attributes that differ between event types.

. You can use these APIs individually or in combination to provide information about a specific type of event or event types that meet your specifications.

Similar to how you set up filters in the console, API responses can also be filtered. For example, the following CLI command returns all types of the current generation event.

You can filter using partial strings. This is useful for fields with many fields. For example, the following CLI command returns all C5d event types. The partial string is required because the field type event includes additional postscripts and sizes.

You can call to verify that the event types of your choice are offered in a particular region. The following CLI command provides a list of all event types available in your current region.

And accessible event category information makes it easy to find and compare event categories and stay up-to-date on the latest offers. Or, read on to see each of the AWS instance types. Remember that in each category, you need to choose the right AWS instance size for your specific needs. Additionally, older generations of each event type are available for purchase – for example, c5 is the latest “c” event, but c4 and c3 are still available – but if you have an AMI or other dependencies you’ll want to use the older types, as newer types are better for cheaper. The differences are important to some users… but you probably already know who you are.

These AWS EC2 instance types are generally a good place to start, especially if you’re not sure which type to use. There are three general purpose categories.

The t3 family is a class of explosive events. If you have an application that needs to run with some basic CPU and memory usage, you can choose t3. This is great if you have applications that are used sometimes, but not others. If the resource is idle, you will generate CPU credits, which you will use when you use the resource. While this is useful for many things, such as websites or development environments, and is generally inexpensive, make sure you understand how CPU credits work. There is a bit of math involved and they may not be as cheap as they seem at first glance.

Also make sure you understand the difference between t3 and the old t2 – t3 is in “unlimited mode” by default, so if you run out of CPU based event credits, you pay more.

For each of the EC2 types we describe here, we’ll also include a mnemonic to help you remember the purpose of each instance type.

The m5 instance type is similar, but for more consistent workloads. It has a good balance of CPU, memory and disk. It’s not hard to see why almost half of EC2 workloads are on “m” instances. In addition to the m5, there is also the m6g option, which is powered by Arm-based AWS Graviton2 processors, making them more cost-effective. There’s also the m5a, m5n and m4 – mostly safe to ignore unless there’s a specific use case for the m5’s Intel Xeon Platinum 8175 processors. If you’re not sure which to choose, the m5 is the most versatile of Amazon’s event types.

The A1 instance type was announced in late 2018 and will be a cheaper option than other EC2. They are suitable for workloads at scale such as web servers, containerized microservices, caching fleets, distributed data stores and development environments. Events are powered by ARM processors and are suitable for ARM-based workloads.

The c5 instance type has a higher compute/CPU to memory ratio. If you have a computation-intensive application—scientific modeling, intensive machine learning, or multiplayer games—these examples are good choices. There is also a C5d option, which supports SSD. Also see C5n with 100 Gbps network bandwidth and more memory compared to equivalent c5 instances. There is also the C4 family.
