Amazon Consloe – Amazon Web Services (AWS) provides a variety of services and tools for developing, deploying, securing, and managing applications and cloud services. However, this “wealth” can make it difficult to see performance, utilization, and costs, especially for organizations with multiple AWS accounts and multiple self-service users across multiple industries.

To address these challenges, AWS offers AWS Management Console, a free web application for managing AWS accounts, services, and users in a single dashboard. AWS Console is also available as a mobile app in some regions. The jury evaluates its interface: some reviewers like it; others have difficulty using it. Certainly, anyone who is used to the intuitive, centralized control panels of hosting platforms like Plesk or cPanel will initially find the AWS management console daunting.

This post aims to unmask the AWS management console, with the hope that it will become your best friend when managing AWS deployments. Learn more about how Media Temple can help you migrate to the AWS cloud and navigate the AWS management console.

Amazon Just Pushed Game Consoles One Step Closer To Death

The first time you log into the AWS Management Console for your account, the home page will look similar to Figure 1 below. The various sections of the AWS Console home page are portals through which you can access AWS services, solutions, learning resources, and third-party tools in the AWS Marketplace.

From the AWS Management Console, you can access consoles and dashboards for various services used in your AWS deployment. In this section, we describe how to navigate to a service and view a typical service console using IAM as an example.

There are several ways to access the service dashboard from the AWS management console (Figure 2).

You can click on Services in the navigation bar (Figure 2:1) to open the service location window as shown in Figure 3. Here you can…

You can also click inside the Search for Services text box (Figure 2:2) to open an alphabetical drop-down list of all services, then scroll to the desired service or use the text search to narrow down the list.

There are also two useful shortcuts for navigating to frequently used services. The first is provided by the AWS console itself, which keeps a list of recently visited sites (Figure 2:3). The second is the ability to pin a service to the navigation bar by clicking the Pin icon to open an alphabetical list of services, then dragging the service icon to the navigation bar. You can unlock a service by clicking the lock icon and dragging the service icon out of the navigation bar.

In the navigation bar. The only differences are that the view is always categorized and there is no history of recently visited consoles.

AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) is a leading security service that helps define and manage role-based access to AWS services and resources. Here we use IAM as an example of what the service-specific console looks like in the AWS management console.

Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud

On the left side (Figure 5:1) is a service-specific menu of the various items that need to be defined and managed within the IAM service (groups, users, roles, etc.), with the control panel as the main page of the service.

In the middle (Figure 5:2) is a dashboard summarizing the IAM resources defined so far and the security posture defined by five key steps (shown in Figure 6 below).

On the right (Figure 5:3) are links to service-specific information and resources, such as video introductions, best practice guidelines and a policy simulator.

Click the step for explanation and button to access the corresponding function as shown in Figure 7 for creating individual IAM users.

How To Send An Email

Either way, the interface for adding, removing or editing users, groups, policies, etc. guides you step by step through the necessary actions, many of which are point and click.

An AWS resource is an entity you can work with, such as an Amazon EC2 instance or an Amazon S3 bucket. A resource group is any number of resources in the same region that meet the same query criteria. The criteria can be that all resources have the same user-defined tag or that they belong to the same AWS CloudFormation infrastructure stack.

Resource groups are really useful for getting information or performing actions on related resources. For example, you can use resource groups to apply security updates or patches to a collection of Amazon EC2 hosts, or you can collect, monitor, and visualize data from all relevant tagged Amazon EC2 instances at a specific application level.

You can view saved groups, create groups, and edit tags using the Resource Groups drop-down menu in the AWS Management Console navigation bar. If you select any of the options, the AWS Systems Manager console will open as shown in Figure 8 below.

The AWS Systems Manager dashboard (Figure 8:1) provides easy access to create, manage, and apply actions to resource groups. When you create a group, you start by specifying query criteria (Figure 8:2) based on tags or a CloudFormation stack. Then define the grouping criteria by selecting the appropriate resource types (Figure 8:3) and adding the desired tags (Figure 8:4). Although not shown in Figure 8, the next step is to select the resources you want to include in the group, give the group a name and description for the group, and add the group’s key/value tags (optional).

The AWS cloud is distributed in 20 geographic regions around the world. The region or regions where AWS is deployed can have a significant impact on cloud costs as service costs vary from region to region (and sometimes even across different availability zones within the same region). The region your app is running in can also affect data latency and other app performance metrics. Additionally, some industries have regulatory restrictions on the countries or regions where cloud resources are deployed, so the choice of AWS regions can also be a compliance issue.

Some services like IAM are global. Most AWS services expect you to specify a region endpoint when accessing the service, although some, such as Amazon EC2, allow you not to explicitly specify a region endpoint. In these cases, AWS defaults to the us-east-1 region.

Please note that the resources offered in each region are independent of each other. Companies often use this for high availability purposes (for example, to maintain redundant failover sites in one or more regions). But it also means that at any time, the AWS management console only shows the services related to the currently selected region as shown on the left side of the navigation bar. When you access a service deployed in a specific region, the region in the navigation bar will automatically update and stay there until you click the arrow to select a different region.

Through the AWS management console, you can also access the billing and cost management dashboard. This free AWS service gives you all the tools you need to gain real-time insight into your AWS usage and costs, including an estimation of your monthly billing fee and monthly service spend, as shown in Figure 9 below.

Understanding AWS’s charges and billing patterns over time is a critical first step in reducing and optimizing your cloud spending. For example, you might find that automated workflows don’t effectively terminate shared resources that are idle. You may also discover usage patterns that lend themselves to discounted payment options, such as upfront payments or reserved instances.

Understanding all the features of the billing and cost management dashboard is beyond the scope of this article, but we strongly recommend that you take the time to review the AWS monthly billing documentation, especially the dashboard.

While you can be sure AWS takes security very seriously, it’s worth taking a closer look to understand exactly how.

To help you navigate the technical jargon of cloud computing, we’ve compiled some common terms and phrases for broad AWS terminology. The tech giant announced its cloud gaming service called Luna on Thursday. The company promises that it will allow gamers to enjoy console video games on devices like Fire TV without significant downloads or updates.
